Test Engineers

Job purpose

  • To work within project and support teams taking responsibility for all aspects of integration & system testing.
  • To take a lead role in supporting clients and internal projects through acceptance testing.
  • To participate in the core testing specialist skill set contributing to the improvement of the cost effectiveness and quality of testing as part of the overall software lifecycle.

Job description

Solution design - testing (70% of time)

  • Work closely with business analysts and developers to understand fully the functional and business requirements of the software under test
  • Design test strategy for all aspects of testing required
  • Create and maintain test plans to current company standards (using business and/or functional specifications) to be used at both integration and system test levels
  • Execute test plans in accordance with the testing schedule, including both manual testing and the use of testing tools
  • Perform regression test efficiently and effectively
  • Progress allocated tasks in accordance with the project plan. Take full responsibility for the scheduled tasks, alerting the project manager immediately to any variations, to allow maximum opportunity to bring the situation back on track
  • Maintain a full record of the test plan results
  • Ensure defects found are raised on the Defect Tracking Tool (TeamTrack) in accordance with company standards. Perform defect analysis and provide detailed feedback to the developers
  • Once fixed, ensure the defects are retested and actioned as appropriate.

Customer relationship management (15% of time)

  • Build relationships with client personnel
  • Support the client

Business knowledge (5% of time)

  • Build relevant product market knowledge
  • Build relevant product sales process
  • Build understanding of regulation requirements relating to relevant products

Product / process / technical knowledge
(5% of time)

  • Build detailed knowledge of N4 development processes, protocols, methods and tools
  • Build knowledge of N4 portfolio of products

Personal development (5% of time)

  • Continual development through the identification and implementation of own Personal Development Plan.

Education and specific training

Desirable vocational / professional qualifications:

  • ISEB Certification in Software Testing - Foundation
  • Familiarity with Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows XP, Vista
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel

Special skills/training needed to perform the job:

  • 12+ months experience of manual testing, ideally within a financial services environment
  • Experience of at least 1 project through the life cycle of development and into production
  • Good knowledge of quality processes in all phases of a project
  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle and the role that testing plays within it
  • Experience of using TeamTrack or other Defect Management tools
  • Knowledge of all aspects of software testing and the disciplines necessary for it to be successful
  • Awareness of test tools, such as Mercury Interactive's WinRunner and Test Director
  • Exposure to client/server and internet technologies
  • Good appreciation of Version Control, Release Management, Testing and Task Management, working within a team environment (Application Life-cycle Management (ALM))
